Sony bought another studio - the creators of the recent game Returnal
Finnish studio Housemarque has just become the 13th studio owned by Sony. Housemarque recently launched the PlayStation 5 exclusive Returnal, which picked up very good reviews, and Sony then bought them for an amount not publicly disclosed.
In its 25-year history, the Housemarque team has done games for several platforms, from PC to Xbox, but since 2012 they have mostly partnered with PlayStation for which they have delivered arcade exclusives such as Resogun, Alienation, and Matterfall. Among their more prominent games that have appeared on other platforms are worth mentioning Outland and Nex Machina.
Housemarque says that with Sony's financial stability, they will now be able to create games without any restrictions. They say they will remain true to their approach but will continue to experiment with narrative methods in games. In other words, expect single-player games in the range of Returnal to run under Sony.
As for Returnal, the game has been well received in terms of ratings, but for now, we have no information on how it went on sale. But they are happy at Sony when they decided to extend their collaboration with the Finnish studio.
By the way, it seems that Housemarque is not the only studio that Sony has bought. The Japanese branch of PlayStation briefly released a picture stating that Sony had bought Bluepoint Games studio, the creators of Demon’s Souls remakes for the PS5. We are currently awaiting confirmation or denial of this information.
